Filipino Memes to Live By

Catchphrases, screengrabs, stock images name it. Memes can be catchy, relatable and make you laugh and there are hundreds and millions floating on social media. They rise and become a reflection of the ugly reality, and with just one photo, you can be an instant celebrity. We meme to laugh, to ponder, and to connect with others through humor.

It’s become a universal language that connects cultures and signifies the context of the convention of understanding an image, and its perception may vary from one another’s perspective. In Pinoy context, almost everyone – man, woman, and child can seem to relate, if not, there is always a meme that identifies them.

Eye-dropping headlines and soap opera moments are just one of many. We are going to make a list of memes to live by. Before we go to Tagalog memes, let’s start with headlines that caught our attention:

1. ‘Wala na, Finish na’ (It’s done and finished)

These four words that come off as a condescending end that puts a smile on you’re your face at first. It may sound funny but tracing back from a dark news headline, these words were the confession of a drunk rape suspect’s confession in Cubao. And honestly, the more you hear about its disturbing context, the more it makes your skin crawl.

Paano mo nasabi? (How can you say so?)

Also spoken by a convict, this meme came from a snarky remark we heard in a crime segment on news headlines. Thankfully it didn’t come from as dark a place as the previous one and is somewhat relatable and funny as its snarky undertone is something that works as a comeback in a conversation, or a mood.

Advanced Ako Mag Isip (I think in advance)

“Don’t do drugs” is one of many reminders from our parents that has stuck with us up to now and given that the drug war is at its peak, a call center agent who was arrested for possession and peddling marijuana, begs to differ by justifying his marijuana sideline in addition to his income which he claims is earning 1.5 million pesos.

Fast forward, he broke his English and shifted to Tagalog, saying “advanced ako mag-isip”. He then reinforces his claims on pursuing political endeavors and later solving Antipolo’s land area, talk about planning, and this guy seems to teach us to plan ahead. Not long after, his words became a hit for explaining creative reasoning. We have to give credit for his words and making effort to speak in straight English.

Turning these tragic events to comedy, in the end, can say a lot how a meme is born. It just happens that we need to find humor in these instances, as the echoing lyrics of Elton John’s Skyline Pigeon says: ‘to laugh and cry’.

Tagalog memes

While the English language has become a primary speaking language in the Philippines and used to draft our constitution, the Tagalog language has a strong connection to us because it’s our native tongue. Looking at social media alone, a few iconic catchphrases allowed us to be more connected to our national language, and these memes may look familiar or nostalgic as they are taken straight out from your childhood cartoons and classic Latino telenovelas

Known as Marimar’s nemesis, Senyora Santibanez made sure Marimar’s life a living hell, and her devilish, mean snare/smile has caught the attention of facebook users, some of the iconic memes come with the term “alipin”, meaning “slave”. One of the captions say: “Facundo, nagugutom ang mga alipin, pakainin mo ng corned beef” (Facundo, the slaves are hungry, feed them corned beef) then a lot popped out until the infamous 20 Alipin facts meme became the pinnacle of the corned beef saga that also poked fun at elitists.

Later on, Senyora has also become a social media personality and posts updates in character.

Princess Sarah Memes

A childhood cartoon classic and later on adapted on screen starring Camille Prats as Sarah and Angelica Panganiban as Becky, the dynamic of these two characters have been iconic. Princess Sarah is without Becky and Becky has become a meme icon.

“Becky, kulang ang patatas natin” (Becky, we are short on potatoes) was one of the first memes that garnered attention in social media and one of the entries that became popular featured a Potato Corner booth.

Other than Becky and Sarah, you may have probably stumbled upon memes involving Lavina or Sarah’s ‘words of wisdom’ memes proliferating in dedicated meme pages on Facebook.

“So Sino Maga-adjust?” (So, who’s gonna adjust?)

Some reaction shots can give birth to a meme when given the right caption because together, they can become something else: be it a grievance, a burn or a comeback. Take one reaction shot of Pia Wurtzbach in Miss Universe a few years ago.

She may not have said it out loud but it looked like it was what she was thinking, and her expression resonated with us because at some point we may have said it ourselves.

The Nerf Gun

A teleserye is not without outlandish plot (twists) and Mortal Kombat-esque over the top catfights and action sequences. Take Ika-6 na Utos, where one scene shows Ryza Cenon’s Georgia in a heated confrontation with Sunshine Dizon’s Emma at toy store where Georgia pointed a nerf gun at Emma that made the scene irresistibly funny and again, found its way on social media and went through crazy edits referencing videogame like Persona 5 that included the game’s graphics.

On second thought, that would make a great arcade game. And while you’re at it, there’s a handful of fight scenes to savor for laughs (I recommend the Xerox fight sequence).

Bonus: The meme went viral, even Ryza Cenon made fun of it on her Instagram account.

MRT Detachment

It is said that we Filipinos are known for our resilience, to even endure the hassles of traffic and daily commute alone that we even found fun in these tragedies. Back in November 2017, the infamous incident of the MRT getting derailed once again made headlines on social media and numerous edits and comments aroused. One notable meme added a hyperspace effect, jumping to lightspeed.

Memes have found a way to make us laugh in and out of Filipino context. Not only has it given us callbacks but created a discourse and in a way, make us more connected to our language and each other.
